Life Skills Training
Training in Independent Living, Literacy and Work Skills
Life Skills training aims to:
-
Smooth the transition from Residential Care to Supported Living, and from
Supported Living to independence within the community.

Enable trainees to widen their range of skills thereby enhancing self esteem
and fulfilling the potential of every individual, including achieving
nationally recognised qualifications.

Encourage progression from work training on site to voluntary (unpaid) work in
the community and where appropriate to paid jobs.
The Life Skills Centre houses Independent Living Skills, Literacy & Work Skills training. Professional Tutors supported by a team of volunteers offer training sessions to individuals or small groups.
Independent Living Skills training includes

Sessions aimed to encourage a greater degree of independence, social awareness
and confidence in day to day activities
-
Sessions in money management, shopping and care of the home
-
Cookery sessions take place in a newly fitted domestic kitchen, designed with
both high and low work surfaces
-
Great emphasis is placed on healthy living with sessions devoted to exercise,
diet and food hygiene
-
Safety within the home and community programmes include the use of local
facilities
-
Social Skills
Literacy
-
Literacy sessions cover a variety of reading and writing activities which
include word games, creative writing, poetry, communication skills as well as
basic grammar, punctuation and spelling exercises
-
Each learning plan is unique with specialist, contemporary training materials
chosen to reflect the aims and interests of the individual

Drama workshops, organised in conjunction with the Nomad Theatre and the Scarab Theatre Company, have proved a popular activity, enhancing self confidence, teamwork skills and creativity
Work Skills
Training is given in the social skills needed for work
in the community:

to make job applications.

to perform successfully at interviews.
-
to deal with bosses, peers and customers.
Individual clients are encouraged to attend courses at
local adult education centres in subjects such as:

Cooking & nutrition
-
Personal safety
-
Confidence & awareness
-
Computers
-
First Aid
-
Lip reading
We also host Adult Education courses at the Grange
Centre and where appropriate encourage our clients to attend these.
