The aim is for you to gain confidence with the basics and then take your favourite recipes home and prepare them for yourself, family and friends. There is a strong emphasis on nutrition and cooking healthy meals for one person. We have all kinds of aids to help you plan healthy meals. These sessions are creative and enjoyable and you won’t believe the delicious dishes you can make.
The cookery kitchen is divided into four working areas adapted to suit different heights. Sessions often centre round themes suggested by people in the group, such as food from different countries.
If you enjoy cookery you might want to go on and find out about cooking in a working environment. Here you’ll learn professional catering skills, including food hygiene, batch cooking, menu planning and food presentation.
You’ll work in a team and there’s always something different to do. Twice a week you will cook and sell lunched for The Grange staff and people we support. You might bake a celebration cake to order, make jam or chutney from fruit and veg grown in our garden or even bottle the honey from our bees.
Here’s an opportunity to try out your catering skills at the Simply Scones tearoom, which takes place at The Grange every Tuesday afternoon. You’ll make the jam, bake the scones, take customer orders and serve tables. Grange scones are famous locally and we’re always trying out new flavours. At our lunchtime café in Dorking, you can learn to prepare and serve a wider range of snacks and light lunches.
There’s always something going on in catering and always a delicious smell wafting from the kitchen!
