Jess lives at The Grange with two other friends in Supported Living accommodation.
A highlight of Jess’s week is helping at Bridleways horse riding centre, which is just a 10-minute drive from The Grange.
‘My favourite horse is Rosie,’ says Jess. ‘I ride her and then I help with grooming and mucking out.’ The horse Jess rides has been trained by her owner to respond gently to riders with disabilities.
The team at Bridleways like having Jess around. ‘She knows what she is doing and she’s really helpful, especially when we are busy,’ says staff member Tom.
Jess’ other job couldn’t be more different. She is one of eight people we support who have work experience placements at Polesden Lacey, a National Trust property close to The Grange. Some of these people help keep the grounds tidy, others do tours for visitors and others, like Jess, work on the catering team
Every Monday she puts on her catering team uniform, calls her taxi and heads off to help in the busy café.
‘I clear trays away and wipe the tables down,’ she says.
‘It’s hard work but fun.’
