Our Total Communication programme is about communicating effectively with people we support who have learning disabilities. It gives you more choice and independence so that you can control your life as you wish. We recognised that people communicate in many different ways and all forms of communication are valued, respected and promoted.
The Grange is a Centre of Excellence for Makaton. This is a language programme using signs and symbols to help people communicate. It is designed to support spoken language and the signs and symbols are used with speech in spoken word order.
Everyone at The Grange is encouraged to learn Makaton and our ‘Makaton Motivators’ act as signing champions in each department. We also work with Makaton symbols, using MyChoice tablets which can make life easier for those who have difficulty expressing themselves clearly. Using MyChoice a person can see it, hear it and sign it.
PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System) is another tried-and-tested approach that uses pictures to develop communication skills. It’s appropriate if you’re an adult with any of a wide range of learning, speech and communication difficulties, including autism. If you are a PECS user we can support your chosen method of communication.
