Cookery and Catering are very popular activities at The Grange as they offer you so much choice – from learning to cook your own lunch to catering for groups of 20! The photo above shows us with our patron, HRH the Duke of Gloucester, making some special chocolate and orange scones.
Cooking in Granary kitchen
The aim is for you to gain confidence with the basics and then take your favourite recipes home and prepare them for yourself.
There is a strong emphasis on nutrition and healthy eating.
Granary kitchen is adapted so that you can work at different heights and we have kitchen implements, such as speaking scales, to make things easy for you. Just choose what you’d like to make!
Here you’ll learn professional catering skills, including food hygiene, batch cooking, menu planning and food presentation.
You’ll work in a team and there’s always something different to do. Twice a week you will cook and sell lunches for The Grange staff and people we support. You might cater for a group of visitors, bake scones for our Simply Scones tea room or make jam and chutney from produce grown in our garden.
The photo shows our patron Joanna Lumley on a visit to our main catering kitchen.

‘We’re providing a catering experience that will enable people to cook for groups of 20-30 diners, maintain hygiene standards, order supplies and look after money.’
Senior Catering Tutor Maria Weston
Simply Scones tea room
Try out your catering skills at the Simply Scones tearoom, which takes place at The Grange every Tuesday afternoon. You’ll make the jam, bake the scones, take customer orders and serve tables. Grange scones are famous locally and we’re always trying out new flavours.
Grange Cafe Dorking
Here you’re really in the hot seat. You’ll learn to shop for, prepare and serve a wider range of full meals including desserts and it all has to be ready by lunch time. Learn how to take orders, deal with customer and handle money.
Once you have gained confidence and experience in Simply Scones tea room and our lunch cafe in Dorking, you might want to try a work experience placement in a commercial cafe such as the ALDAG cafe in Ashtead or Polesden Lacey National Trut restaurant.
The photo shows Anissa at ALDAG Cafe. She goes there on the bus independently.
