Communication is a basic human right. It is the means by which we are valued by society. It gives you more choice and independence so that you can live your life as you wish.
We recognise that people communicate in many different ways and all forms of communication are valued, respected and promoted.
We are a Makaton Centre of Excellence and everyone at The Grange is encouraged to learn this sign and symbol language system. ‘Makaton Motivators’ act as signing champions in each department. Besides working with paper Makaton symbols, we also use MyChoice touchscreen tablets which can make life easier for those who have difficulty expressing themselves clearly. By using the MyChoice software, a person can ‘see it, hear it and sign it’.

Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is another tried-and-tested approach that uses pictures to develop communication skills. It’s appropriate if you’re an adult with any of a wide range of learning, speech and communication difficulties, including autism. If you are a PECS user we can support your chosen method of communication.
Our Makaton champions now sing in Makaton!
They performed at our Christmas Carol concert at the Menuhin Hall, Stoke D’Abernon and our annual ‘Grange Has Got Talent’ show.
The photo shows some of the Makatones singing and signing a song from ‘The Sound of Music’.
Some people we support attend IncludeChoir, a local singing and signing choir who perform at concerts.
